The Oakland Roadster show really was the only custom car and motorcycle show that ever mattered. When I built the very first El Diablo motorcycle I knew I had to take it to Oakland and try to win the coveted Best of Show prize.  The El Diablo was the very first bike where I completely hand made everything. Man, She was a flaming red, barb free beauty. I know there was no bike that could compete with this one. Little did I know I would be competing against myself? When I received my second place Trophy I also got the judges scorecards. The bike scored a 98% in judging (near perfect) But I had winning points taken away for having a key chain with a nude girl on it. WoW! I guess they failed to see the humor in my vintage 1970’s big bush OUI magazine key fob. Oh well, Fuck’m.
Jump forward a couple years the Daytona Bike Week. The Harley Davidson Factory held “Ride-In” bike show. So I figured what the Hell and entered my newest Hot Rod. Looked like the only bike that I was competing with was built by this metro-sexual turned Biker, Bob Lowe. He built this bike that looked like a cross between a softail and a snowmobile. It was Horrible. I watched him ride the bike in (across the parking lot only) It was sputtering and popping and looked to have non-function brakes. At the end of the day when I received my second place trophy Willy G. Davidson came up to me. He told me that Bob’s bike won because it was bigger and looked like it had more hours of labor in it. Harley then went on to use the front-end design off my second place bike for the Harley Deuce model. Jump forward a decade to this Chopper Build Off competition. When I saw the pictures of Paul Jr’s bike I just chuckled to myself. I knew that I would once again be collecting my second place prize. Paul went out of his way to build a bike that was completely on the nose. It was under the guise of a P-51 mustang “theme”. Only problem is that Mustangs had 4 blade props, and they were not made out of wood. Not that anyone would notice. I will give them credit for the bike having some really nice machine work in it. They rest of it is just good enough to ride out on stage for that competition. He did win it, and I accept my second place with pride. I will continue to build my bikes the way I build them. With my own hands. With my heart. Making sure each and every one I build has a soul. Today I took the Ginsu for a 70-mile ride. Man I love that fucker. It is getting chips, and scratches. The pipes are changing colors. The rear tire is getting worn, and the seat is getting tanned. It’s getting the oil changed, and the carb adjusted. It is living the life it was intended to live, as a “motorcycle”“2nd Place”
